Keeping your skin beautiful
AFTER cosmetic skin treatments

Caring for your Skin

To maximise results from cosmetic skin treatments (like chemical peels and skin needling), the after care you will need to perform on your skin will vary somewhat – depending on the type of treatment you have. However, generally speaking the stronger the treatment, the more intense the after care you require.

But regardless of whether you’ve actually had treatments performed on your skin, many after care techniques make good practice, helping you to maintain good quality skin that will look and feel healthy, brighter and more supple.

Hydration

We all know that water is good for us. It aids in digestion, circulation, absorption and getting rid of toxins in our body. What many people don’t know, is that skin is an organ – just like your liver, heart and lungs, so it’s important to stay well hydrated if you want healthy, gorgeous, glowing skin.

It’s also particularly important to hydrate your skin – inside and out – following cosmetic skin care treatments. To stay hydrated you need to drink at least 7-8 glasses of water a day (to hydrate from the inside) and using a good quality hydrating serum (to hydrate from the outside).

Ideally, your serum should not be oily and must contain a high concentration of Hyaluronic Acid, which – by holding 1000 times its own weight in water – helps to draw moisture to the skin and keep it there. If your skin has a tendency to be quite dry, you can also use a good quality moisturising cream in addition to your serum.

Sun protection

So much of good skin care is really just common sense. As you know, UV rays are harmful to the body and cause an aging appearance in our skin. To prevent this, use a moisturiser during the day with SPF protection, ideally one that is both a physical and chemical barrier to UV light blocking UVA and UVB. This is not something that you can find in over the counter sunscreens, only medical grade moisturisers – like DermaQuest – provide this type of protection. DermaQuest offers a line of sun protection suitable for all skin types.

Following your cosmetic treatment while your skin is more sensitive, you must also wear a hat and try to stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible. The type of treatment you’ve had, and your skins own unique response to it, will affect how long you need to take these extra precautions.

Good Skin Care Regime

How you care for your skin at home is hugely important to improving the quality of your skin in the long term, as this is where most skin care actually happens.

Following cosmetic skin treatments, your recommended home skin care routine will depend on the type of treatment you received, and your individual skin type. Your dermal therapist will advise you on this as part of your procedure and consultation.

Generally, all home skin care routines should involve the use of a good daily cleanser, a serum (may include hydrating and rebuilding properties if the skin requires repair) and daily moisturiser (don’t forget the SPF). In some cases, additional night time moisturisers to further hydrate dry skin, or moisturisers with peptides to help regenerate the skin for anti-aging may be used.

In doing all of this, it’s important not to overload your skin with too many products – instead try to address one to two skin issues at a time. This way you will achieve optimal results and your skin will respond better to other products when they are required.

Makeup

Whilst makeup can be worn after skin treatments, we advise patients wear mineral makeup, if they feel they need to wear something. Mineral makeup contains no irritants that can impede the body’s healing response the body following treatment. Mineral makeup is particularly good for daytime wear due to the extended period of time the material is in contact with your skin.

If you’re looking for product ideas, we recently discovered an excellent quality Perth-based, organic, animal cruelty free, vegan makeup brand called The Makeup Factory, that we highly recommend. We have all have tried and tested their products ourselves, as we would never recommend anything we don’t wear on our own skin.

We especially love their 5 minute essentials kit which includes everything you need for an efficient and healthy way to wear daily makeup. Regardless of which products you use, the mot important thing to remember is that what you put on your skin is not just skin deep, it absorbs into your blood stream, so be selective!
