Three steps to healthier skin this summer

1. Stay sun smart

Did you know that Perth has the third highest maximum daily UV levels in the country? Or that 95-99% of skin cancers in Australia are caused by exposure to the sun? Or that Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world?

Even more frightening is the fact that we don’t even need to get visibly sunburnt to cause permanent damage to our skin cells, alter our DNA and increase our risk of developing skin cancer. So if there’s only one thing you do this summer, make sure you take good care of your skin in the sun.

No doubt you’ve heard it all before, but being sun smart means slipping on a shirt, slopping on some sunscreen and slapping on a hat. Wear sunnies whenever you’re out and about in the sun (the bigger the better). Avoid the heat of the day and when you do venture out, be sure to hunt down some shade.

2. A little love goes a long way

The more effort you put in, the better your skin. And while not all skin damage is reversible, good skincare can go a long way to reducing wear and tear.

No matter how tired or pressed for time you are, by taking just a few minutes at each end of the day to care properly for your skin you will soon see results. At very least you should be removing your makeup and cleansing your face twice a day. 3. Beauty from the inside out

• Drink 8 glasses of water (or more) each day.
• Limit coffee to one cup per day (easier said than done).
• Go easy on the booze this summer (think mocktail, not cocktail).
• Eat a balanced and nutrient-dense diet for stronger, healthier skin. There is mounting evidence to suggest that diet alone can be a powerful force in balancing our hormones, reducing acne and eradicating inflammation associated with skin aging.
• Eat more – yes that’s more – of the healthy fats found in avocado, fish, nuts and seeds.
• Lastly, although not diet-related – get your beauty sleep, as sufficient rest will improve the overall condition of your skin.
