Needle your way to better skin

Posted on 6 August 2018

The first time you heard of Skin Needling did it fill you with fear? Did you wonder what on earth it could possibly be!? Well fear not, it’s not as painful or medieval as it sounds. Quite the contrary – it’s a highly effective technique for transforming scarred, stretched and ageing skin. Here we guide you through this powerful treatment, and what it can do for you.

So what exactly is skin needling?

Skin needling is the use of micro needles, similar to acupuncture needles moving at a high frequency to create tiny punctures in the skin. This stimulates the skin to repair itself producing more collagen and new, healthy skin cells. It is what is known as injury-induced collagen production and skin repair.

When is this treatment is used?

Skin needling is proven to work well on pitted acne scarring, striations (stretch marks), general scarring, anti-aging and can reduce pore size.

Is there anyone this treatment isn’t suitable for?

Skin needling treatment must not be used on:

  • Patients with cold sores, skin infections or warts
  • Those susceptible to keloid scarring or a high risk of bleeding (such as those undergoing anti-coagulant therapy or suffering from uncontrolled diabetes)
  • Patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy or high doses of cortisol
  • Pregnant or lactating women
  • Children and teenagers

What happens during the procedure?

Prior to the actual skin needling, numbing cream is placed on the skin for 30-60 minutes to ensure patient comfort during the treatment. (This time will race by if you have the procedure performed at The Smile Clinique, while you relax with a cooling eye mask or lie back in comfort and enjoy catching up on your latest Netflix shows).

For the actual procedure, Dr Varma uses Dermastamp, the latest in micro needling technology. Dermastamp is more comfortable than other types of skin needling (like the Dermaroller) and includes a high concentration Hyaluronic acid gel lubrication and penetration into the micro punctures and pores for optimal results. This process can take up to half an hour depending on the area being worked on.

The treatment can be carried out on the full face for a more even and noticeable result or smaller, problematic areas can be treated in isolation. The decision on which areas to treat is yours, and can be made after a thorough skin consultation. Dr Sarah Varma can discuss all of the treatment options available to you, to help tailor the treatment to your skin needs and personal preferences.

How should you care for your skin after treatment?

Following your treatment, your skin will have some redness, and may feel sensitive – similar to sunburn. Your skin will also need to be treated with appropriate after care products and sun protection, as treatment leaves your skin more vulnerable than usual while it is healing and regenerating.

Wear a hat when outdoors, avoid direct exposure to harsh sunlight and try to avoid wearing any makeup for 48 hours. If necessary you can use good quality, mineral makeup while the skin is healing.
Post treatment is the very best time to nourish your skin so that new skin forms with strong, healthy cells. This can also assist with maximum collagen production. DermaQuest offers a post skin needling kit, highly recommended for optimal nourishment. The use of sophisticated stem cell technology in the DermaQuest products will aid your body in generating a new, better version of your skin.

What results can you hope to achieve?

Within 3-6 treatments you can expect to observe a significant improvement in the quality of your skin. Everyone’s skin cell turn over and bodily reaction to the treatment differs to an extent. (Thus, the number of treatments required varies from person to person).
