For many people, visiting the dentist can be really stressful. This can stem from a pre-existing fear or anxiety, or it can also appear because it can be hard to find the time to visit the dentist in your busy day-to-day schedule.

How yoga can improve your dental experience

Stress Relief

A stressful lifestyle can lead to depression, anxiety and it can also cause dental problems.

People who are stressed also have a tendency to grind their teeth and can also develop a condition called dry mouth. Dry mouth occurs when there is not enough saliva produced in your mouth. The reason this can cause issues is because saliva helps to keep your mouth clean.

Participating in yoga can help alleviate stress by calming the mind and promoting relaxation.

Improves Posture

Poor posture affects almost every part of the body, including your mouth!

If you have bad posture, it can cause your lower jaw to move forward. It can even affect the alignment of the teeth. This results in a condition called TMJ disorder. TMJ disorder can result in dental problems, such as teeth grinding, difficulty chewing and swallowing and can cause pain in the face and jaw.

Yoga can help take the strain off of the jaw and prevent TMJ disorder.

Reduce Inflammation

Bacteria in the mouth can cause gum inflammation. Chronic stress can worsen this gum inflammation however, yoga can help reduce inflammation. Researchers believe that yoga helps reduce inflammation in the body by alleviating stress.

I didn’t always have yoga as my daily ritual. Like many, I lived a life of pace and change, always on a quest to be perfect, to be ahead of the pack and to tick off boxes. The pace of life is still just as busy for me now, but the purpose is different. There is a fire that burns deep to share the gift of yoga and it is with that fire that I chase my dreams.

Yoga is a lifestyle, one that encompasses the vitality of mind, body and soul. There is no separateness which I have truly come to understand. My teachings are very personal and carry messages to be taken well beyond the mat.
